LINK Project Proposal
For LINK I am interning at Turtle Lake refuge. This organization is a all raw foods restaurant/farm that grows and creates its own food. This restaurant was made to bring the knowledge of healthy foods and there benefits to the public. This is presented by the act of farming and making all natural raw foods for the public to enjoy out of one place. This organization is founded on the ideals of giving and helping others. The restaurant itself is operated on a donation policy and doesn’t expect money in return but gives people a chance to experience a new and high quality healthy style of eating without worrying about money. This restaurant introduces a new way of eating using extremely healthy foods known as raw foods. Their mission as it says on there web sight is “ to celebrate the connection between personal health and wild lands”. This whole idea has been lead by one women Katerina Blair who has carried this idea and spread it to the minds of many more just like her who share her love of healthy food and a healthy life.
For my internship I am being mentored by the one and only Katerina Blair. Katerina had been raised in an environment where healthy food was a way of life, in result of this she was able to take her love of healthy food to a whole new level by opening her own restaurant. Her journey began with her mother being sick and he search for a way to help. This inspired me to intern with her. Through her journey with new findings of raw foods and how to use them in a positive way for your body she was not only able to help her mother but was able to discover a passion of hers that would be useful to many others around her. In 1998 Katerina founded Turtle Lake Refuge, taking her studies of wild plants from her teen years to a whole new level. Katerina plays a large role in Turtle Lake refuge. She teaches her coworkers about plants and how to cooks she makes sure everything is on track and bring light to the whole organization she created. In meeting Katerina I have been amazed by how welcoming and warm she is, the knowledge that she has gained over the years interests me greatly. In doing this internship I hope to take away a knowledge of raw foods that I did not have previously. My hope is that Katerina will be able to pass on her knowledge to me and I will be able to use this knowledge to help me in my personal life to be healthier and perhaps take away my health problems completely.
From a young age I have always been interest in the Culinary Arts. I enjoy cooking greatly and I love sharing my love of food with others. In recent years however I made the discovery that I have Celiac Disease, this has been greatly limiting to what I eat in a large way. With this discovery however a new door opened up, a door full of healthy food and new possibilities. So when I began to look for possible internships I kept this aspect of my life in mind. My mom being friends with a friend of Katerina’s turned me on to Turtle Lake Refuge. She explained to me exactly what the organization was and how it worked. After hearing about Turtle Lake Refuge and all they do there I developed a great interest in learning and studying there. I began to think of the benefits the knowledge the organization would bring me, and how it could bring a healthy knowledge to me and my families lives. My goals in doing this internship is to educated myself in the ways of raw food, growing and cooking so I can open up a door in my life to a happier healthier life.
For my project I have the idea to make a cookbook. I want to take all different kinds of recipes for main courses, desserts, drinks and many more and put them into one place where they can be looked at and used to create amazing healthy delicious dishes for everyone to enjoy. I want to take all of those amazing new things I have learned in the art of food preparation and share it with my classmates, family, and my friends. By making a cookbook I not only educate my fellow friends and family on the benefits of healthy living but I also take the ideals of Turtle Lake Refuge and share them with the people around me. I can open their minds the way mine has been opened. By opening the minds of those around me I would be contributing to the community. Giving them a new health plan to live by. In completing this project I hope to be able to make a cookbook that I can share with others and be able to educate those who might not know about the benefits of raw foods. My hope is that this cookbook will be something I can take with me when I head to other places, something I can continue to share with others as the years go by and something to revert back to in times of bad health and sickness.
In order to achieve my final product of my project, my cookbook I must first learn about healthy foods and how you use them to benefit your body. I have to have a great deal of insight in the art of raw food preparation and farming. I will have to learn alongside co-workers as they show me how to grow the food harvest the food then how to prepare the food in a way where it is the most beneficial to the body as possible. To completely my project I will have to add little by little as my knowledge expands, every time I learn something new, I can add that to my cookbook knowing all the steps it took to get to that point and recording each. I will take time outside of my internship to organize my data and everything I learn and create a visual to go with my cookbook to add to the importance of the final product. After I have collected everything I need then I will be ready to make the cookbook itself by the end of the internship I will have made a book that I can show and share with my friends, classmates, and family.
In setting up my internship I ran into some obstacles like anything in life it had its challenges. When I first tried contacting Katerina, using email and phone calls I did not reach her even after many attempts. This presented a challenge in the setting up of my internship. I overcame this challenge by being patient and persistent and after awhile it payed off after awhile I received a reply and the challenges I had faced were overcome all of my questions answered. By partaking in this experience I have learned that in the professional work world it pays off to be polite and patient. This is a skill I can use in my life in the years to come.
