Reflection
In spanish we did a creative project opening our minds to our creative sides. For this project we were to make a survival guide for a spanish speaking place of our choice. My partner and I decided that we were going to our project on Bolivia. We started off our project by doing extensive research on the place, people, activities, housing and customs. After looking into these subjects we were able to find enough information to start on our project. We started the project by doing scenarios. We did these on hotels, food, activities, and many more putting dialogues to go with each, a vocab list and a short informational box. We did this for each and then proceeded to make a cover page to show off our work, a bibliography to record what sights we got information from, an index to search the guide to make it easy to find a specific topic and maps so you have a visual of the place we have prepared you to explore and enjoy.
Along with the survival guide we were required to perform a skit. In writing this skit we looked into the way the buses run around Bolivia and what are the common happenings in those areas. After doing the right amount of research we were able to make a skit that was realistic and entertaining to some degree. We did our skit about a bus ride in Bolivia, the costs, and what to expect on a bus, we also included some of our own into the skit. In the skit we had the passengers get robbed and the driver just laugh at them when they say to go after the robber because in our research we found that this is a common event in Bolivia on the buses and bus rides, to get robbed and the locals are just used to aspect of their life so they are always on the lookout. The performance aspect of the skit was not my favorite, for me it was difficult because I have difficulty speaking spanish words out loud. I did enjoy this part of the project however due to the fact that it gave the project a new twist one that I have never experienced in a spanish project before in my previous years.
From my research I learned many different new and exciting facts about a place I previous didn’t know anything about, Santa Cruz, Bolivia. I learned about the kind of restaurants that Bolivia has to offer, the prices, and where to find the most reasonably priced food options. Along with this I also got to take a look into the different activities that are available in Bolivia and was surprised to find that they have wildlife areas you can go visit along with water parks and amusement parks that are always good for the whole family. Not only did I learn about the activities and food I also got to take a look at the landscape of Bolivia by looking at maps from our travel guide. By searching for these maps I was able to look at Bolivia from a whole new perspective. It was refreshing to focus on a place that I didn’t know very well to get a fresh perspective on the world and the places around me.
There were many positive aspects of doing a project. It gave me insight into the culture and the types of the things you can take part in if you have the chance to visit Bolivia. It gave me a view outside of the box that I live in. Not only did the research open my eyes to the world around me but it gave me good ideas for our skit. Along with the skit I experienced growth as well. In doing the skit I was pushed out of my comfort zone. For me this is not always a bad thing and it helped me to get out of the silent stage in my process of learning spanish. Through doing this project I have a better grasp on how to use spanish words in context in the correct format, a wider vocabulary and a better understanding of how to talk in spanish. This project also prepared me in the sense that if I wanted to travel to Bolivia I would have an easier time doing so due to the fact that I have a better understanding of the geography of the place, where the best places to stay and eat are and I am more comfortable with my spanish making this project a great tool for future experiences. This project truly helped me with my spanish and informed me at the same time it was a good use of spanish time and I enjoyed it greatly. In the end all it took was a spanish project to get me thinking outside of the box for a little while, letting myself be open to new experiences and places that I would never have considered before.
