Mentor Interview
Over the course of time I spent at Turtle Lake Refuge, Katerina and I had many exciting conversations about her work, how she came to be where she is today and her love of raw foods. In this paper I will share with you from memory the conversations we had over the course of three weeks I spent at Turtle Lake Refuge.
One day we talked about how she came to be where she is today. She told me that her love of raw foods and her connection with nature started at a very young age. She told me “ My love of raw foods really took flight at age eleven”. She explained to me that her mother was a strong influence in her path to raw foods. Her mother had been ill and fell back on raw foods for support through this Katerina interests really sparked. With the support from her mother and her own interests she was able to pursue those interests in a big way. Getting out into nature and really exploring the world of raw foods.
One day when we were at the farm I asked. How did Turtle start? Katerina smiled to herself and explained to me that she used to sell raw foods of the back of her bike and her friends would do the same. She said it was a fun hobby that they all took part in. One day a man took interest in her raw food bike business. She explained to him her dream of someday opening a restaurant where she could sell raw foods as a living. He thought it was amazing so he donated a small part of land to her so she could start up the farm. Thats how Turtle Lake Refuge got its start.
A week or so in I really started to focus on the health aspects of the food made at Turtle Lake Refuge. They had showed me how to make the food and how to grow and take care of the microgreens but I never really went into depth about the health benefits. So I talked to Katerina and asked. She told me that not only do the microgreens provide a great amount of protein that helps boost your body immune system they also help with skin blemishes. I found this very interesting.
As I looked into health some more katerina began to talk to me about self care. She told me about how she chooses to live. She explained to me that she avoids all conditions, shampoos, lotions, and body mists with chemicals in them. She explained to me that when you put these chemicals onto your skin they clog your pores. When you are using these chemicals it is making your skin dirtier instead of cleaner. It destroys your skin cells and doesn’t help in any way. These things with natural ingredients are way better to your body. Knowing this information really opened my eyes my life choices.
As my internship came to a close, I began to look at the connection between food and emotion. Gaining interest in the subject I brought my interests to Katerina and we had yet another conversation. She told that emotion and diet are completely related, you eat good and you feel good, you are happy. If you eat bad you feel bad and you are not going to be in a good mood. I found this very interesting and will use this in the future to help myself.
In the end I am very glad I chose to come to Turtle Lake Refuge for my internship. My knowledge of food and health was expanded greatly through this internship. I gained insight I can share to help others throughout my life as well as myself. I am very thankful for the experience I had at during my Internship and they will serve me greatly in the future.
